Summer in the city can be a sticky, sweaty, sweltering affair. While the city may not seem as summer-friendly or relaxing as the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard or some other Nancy Meyer-esque beachy, locale, there are ways to turn your staycation into the ultimate summer vacation.
Splurge on a luxe hotel.
Since you won’t be spending money on airfare, check-in to a posh hotel to be pampered for the night. Most hotels offer last minute deals to fill un-booked rooms. Call the hotel directly for an inside scoop on deals. Or check out The Standard Hotel’s One Night Standard app which posts day-off, deeply discounted room rates for the uber-chic hotel on the Highline fancied by the fashion-set.
Go on a beach vacation.
If an Instagram feed full of your friends’ sand and surf pics is giving you major beach envy, check out the Playland Motel in the Rockaways. If you’re looking for a beach-getaway that is heavy on the music, craft cocktails and fresh food, this adult-only hipster resort is for you. Located directly on the beach and accessibly by the subway, Playland Motel is perfect for those wanting a beach party close to home.
Lounge poolside.
Sometimes the only way to beat the heat is by jumping in a pool. Luckily, New York has some great outdoor public pools where you can cool off, swim laps or lounge with a popsicle and a trashy book. We love the massive Red Hook pool early in the morning when you can have the lap lanes all to yourself. If you are in need of something a bit more glamorous, we recommend the rooftop pool at the James Hotel in Soho. A day pass ($40) will give you full access to the pool, its killer bar and spectacular views of lower Manhattan.
Go for a hike.
For those looking to get in touch with nature to balance out the stresses of city life, an exotic forest is only a short ride on Metro North away. The Thain Family Forest at New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx has miles of lush hiking trails you can explore – and be back home in time for dinner.
Spa Day
One of the greatest pleasures of a vacation is indulging in a massage, facial or body treatment (or sometimes all three). On your staycation, take advantage mid-week deals most spas offer and treat yourself to a spa day. At Great Jones Spa, one of our go-to spots for great sports massages and bespoke facials, all treatments get you access to the water lounge where you can soak away the afternoon.
