Backyard bbqs, beach trips, lazy Sundays in the park. Summer is officially here and we’ll be spending a lot more time outside. We all know sun protection is a non-negotiable, but many brands are full of toxic chemicals. Plus, a recent study by the Environemntal Working Group found many sunscreens are less effective than stated – and some flat out do not work.
We’ve rounded up our favorite effective sunscreens for you to try this summer. Plus, a way to protect your skin from the inside out.
All of our picks scored high on the EWG list and are non-toxic.
Face – Elta MD
A gentle lotion with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide broad-spectrum protection, this is the perfect day-to-day sunblock. It has a light, non-greasy consistency, quickly absorbs into the skin and does not clog pores.
Badger scoured very high on the EWG ranking, due to its high percentage of zinc oxide, which acts as a physical block to the sun. This is a thick cream that you really need to rub in. Badger is ideal for when you need to bring out the heavy hitters.
Juice Beauty makes products full of natural ingredients to moisturize, protect and nurture your skin. Their sunscreen is no exception. A completely non-chemical formula, this sunscreen adds aloe, sunflower olive and resveratrol to a zinc oxide base for extra skin moisturizing. It quickly absorbs into the skin and can easily be applied all over your body for a day at the beach.
An organic, mineral-only product made with plant extracts, Goddess Garden Kids sunscreen is lightweight but powerful. Plus, like all of the Goddess Garden sunscreens, it comes in very handy TSA-approved sizes, which makes it very convenient to reapply during the day.
Internal Sunscreen – Hawaiian Astaxanthin
In addition to wearing sunblock and protective gear, like a hat and sunglasses, you can also try supplementing your skin from the inside with Hawaiian Astaxanthin. A potent antioxidant, Astaxanthin taken as a supplement can act as an internal sunscreen. You shouldn’t use it as your only sun block but add it to your diet for an extra bit of protection – and the side effect of glowing skin!
