With the “Will it? Won’t it?” snow forecasts of New York lately, Haiku’s been on our minds more so than usual. A small town on Maui and home to some of the island’s greatest hiking trails, fresh water swimming pools of hidden waterfalls, tropical landscapes, plentiful ranches, and some of our favorite eats (like Maui Kombucha and Nuka), Haiku exudes a raw kind of creativity that differs from its neighbor Paia.
Located upcountry, in the heart of the island’s north shore, this small town has much to offer those who prefer a more off the beaten path experience; it’s where you will find a more chill and serene Maui than most of its westward counterparts. And for those with a nomadic habit willing to trek away from the mainstream, this is where you will undoubtedly leave your heart.
No doubt that our feelings for Haiku are evident in this recent shoot by one of our favorite creatives, Sara Dungo, who proves that black totally thrives in paradise. For the city dweller and part-time nomad, it’s easy to get carried away with thinking you need to buy a whole new wardrobe just for a visit to the islands. But despite the stark contrast in climate and vibes, at KR we try to save any shopping we have to do for the trip itself (unless we’re replacing pieces we already own). Slouchy pants, the same ones we’ll pair with a blazer or chunky knit at home, also translate perfectly in bamboo land with a simple top. It is also an easy way to upgrade your airport fashion as well. Looking for a pair? We love Joie’s Mariner Jogger Pants, Ramy Brook’s stretch silk cropped pants, and a textured variation like these from Rebecca Taylor.
Does Haiku remind you of another place you’ve been to? Does your city style support your travel personality? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
