Take one look at Marianna Jamadi‘s Instagram feed and you can practically feel the vintage sun on your skin. As a travel photographer, writer, and the creative behind Nomadic Habit, Jamadi knows a thing or two about striving for a balanced lifestyle. While she was born and raised in California, Jamadi spent her early adult years in New York and many others roaming the world finding beauty and bliss in experience. When she’s not trekking through desserts or posting up at boutique hotels that should be on everyone’s radar, the 1/2 Finnish, 1/2 Indonesian beauty considers LA home base and also works with brands to create unique content around their product. We caught up with Marianna where she shared with us her island essentials, her spirit city, and the one place in the entire world she still likes to go to stay grounded.
What is your “urban island,” that oasis in the big city that helps you find balance?
The beach near my apartment in Long Beach always grounds me. Whether I go for a walk or a bike ride, the ocean air and sand always has a way of calming me down.
What is your favorite adventure?
A one week nomadic tour down to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia was something I’ll never forget.
If you were an island, which one would you be?
Lombok. A little off the beaten path, wild, pristine beaches, great food, and kind people.
If you were a city, which one would you be?
Barcelona. The perfect mix of beach life, city life, culture, and European charm.
What are your five island essentials?
Coconut oil, sunblock, a Matter Prints scarf, Dharma Co sunglasses, and a Yellow 108 hat.
What travel trend do you think is the most underrated?
Homestays. They really allow you to connect with people and the local culture. I recently did a great one in Peru with Intrepid Travel.
What travel trend do you think is the most overrated?
The selfie stick!
What was the best piece of advice you’ve every received?
Live your questions.
What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever given?
Being uncomfortable means you are learning something and growing in some way. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
We believe all jewelry tells a story. What is the story behind your favorite piece of jewelry?
I have a large black ring that I bought in the markets of New Delhi, India. It was not expensive or fancy but I carry it with me always as a reminder of the boldness of travel. It always reminds me of adventure.
