In our interviews for #MyUrbanIsland, we like to ask, “What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?” Recently, someone flipped the question back at me and it didn’t take very long to think of the answer. My first job out of college was at a financial services firm doing investor relations consulting. I remember going to the kitchen one day and running into a colleague that I would see occasionally around the office. We weren’t close but friendly and we dished out the standard small talk that typically ensues on Mondays after the weekend. I told him that my weekend was good and that I recently picked up my camera again and wanted to make more of an effort to keep up with my photography. He nodded and asked if I ever heard of this quote:
Find three hobbies you love: One to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative.
I hadn’t heard that before and have never forgotten it since. Interests come and go but having any interests at all – in other words, caring about something more than your job and your relationships, something that you truly do or have for yourself and no one else – is so important for who you are as an individual. And this month’s content embraces all that. We explore: hobbies for different personalities, the best masks for all of your summer hair woes (from frizzy to sun-baked, we really found something for everyone); tips for a great sleep; new interviews in our #MyUrbanIsland series; and more.

One last thing- this photo was taken by my mom at the Louvre in Paris, France just last week. She and my sister were wandering the grounds and I was so exhausted from all the walking and the heat, I parked at the first empty ledge I saw to “rest my eyes” for a second. I inherited my love for photography from my mother who incessantly documented our entire childhood from behind her camera. And even now that my siblings and I are all adults, she clearly has no plans on stopping anytime soon.
Cheers,
