While a holistic approach to beauty – what we eat, drink, and do being as important as what we apply for our skin – may be a newer concept in the US, the ancient tradition of Aruyveda has been approaching beauty in a completely holistic way for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, there are three doshas, or constitutions types– Pitta, Vatta and Kapha. Most people are combinations of each type and you can find out your make-up with this quiz. Through diet, exercise and beauty rituals, Ayurveda seeks to bring all three doshas into harmony within your body. Vatta is connected to space and air, therefore Vattas tend to have dry skin, slight builds, and wrinkle-prone. Pittas – fire and water – are more athletic in build, and usually have sensitive skin prone to rashes and breakouts. Kaphas are rooted in earth and water ant tend towards lustrous but oily skin and hair, larger builds and sleepy digestion. You can work with an Aruyvedic specialist to create a custom program for your health, incorporating beauty products, diet and exercises. But there are also some rituals that are recommended regardless of your doshic make-up.

Swish a small about of coconut or sesame oil in your mouth first thing in the morning for 15-20 minutes. This will help remove toxins emitted over night, as well as clean between your gums and whiten teeth. Makes sure to spit not swallow the oil afterwards for cleaner and happier gums.
Another morning ritual, use a dry, natural brush to jumpstart your lymphatic systems. Starting from your feet, brush in circular motions towards your heart. Use some force but not too much that you will irritate your skin. Dry brushing has been shown to help improve circulation, combat cellulite and move lymph through your body. Plus it’s a great way to wake yourself up in the morning.
Ayurveda highly emphasizes the importance of self- massage (as if we needed another excuse to get one!). When practicing self-massage (or Abhyanga), use warm oils best suited to your dosha. Vatas should use oils with scents that relax (like patchouli and vetiver), Pittas those that sooth (like ylang-ylang and lavender) and Kaphas those that invigorate (like rosemary and frankincense).
