Rooftop parties, picnics, rosé brunches – everything is better al fresco in the summer, including cultural events. While we love to spend a sticky summer day in an ice cold movie theater, sometimes evening entertainment is best under the open sky. Spark your creativity and inspiration this summer by combining the great outdoors with one of our recommended open-air arts events.
Now in it’s fourth year, Books Under the Bridge is a series of readings, talks and Q&A with writers in Brooklyn Bridge park. Local independent bookstores, like WORD and powerHouse Arena each curate each event. Our don’t-miss-pick is Emma Straub reading from her latest Modern Lovers (a KR Summer Read) on July 18th.
NYC Poetry Festival
The mission of the open-air NYC Poetry Festival is to “liberate poets and their work from the dark corners of bars, bookstore, and coffee shops.” With two days of readings on three outdoor stages on Governor’s Island, you can catch readings and performances from a diverse line-up of poets from around the world.
With free screenings hosted all across the city, Rooftop Films brings the drive –in experience to a rooftop near you. Driven by the goal to “engage diverse communities by showing independent movies in outdoor locations,” Rooftop Films’ 2016 eclectic line-up including blockbuster films, independent movies and documentaries. Don’t miss the premiere of the indie rom-com My Blind Brother with Jenny Slate, Nick Kroll and Adam Scott on August 9th.
