Now that the days are longer, the air brighter and clothes lighter, we’re excited to shake off our winter hibernation and go out exploring! We’ve rounded up some of the best events, activities and must-see performances coming to New York this spring.

Sakura Matsuri

Brooklyn Botanical Garden, April 30 – May 1

This annual cherry blossom festival ushers in spring every year with over 60 events celebrating Japanese culture – from taiko drumming performances to tea ceremonies to a J-pop dance party. Walk around the beautiful garden grounds to see the trees in full bloom – and the various attendees decked out in their Harajuku best.

Food Book Fair

Wythe Hotel, May 1-2

Part festival, part conference, the Food Book Fair brings together the best in independent food culture for a weekend affair in Williamsburg. Featuring a pop-up marketplace selling books and magazines, talks with some of the leaders in the independent foodie scene and literary dinners, the Food Book Fair is “food geek heaven.”

Frieze Art Fair

Randall’s Island Park, May 5-8

A yearly art fair held on Randall’s Island, Frieze New York features a wide range of art from both emerging and well-known artists. In addition to roaming throughout the park to check out the art work (or buy some if you are feeling particularly inspired), you can also find talks from art world leaders, interactive sound performances and get an unparalleled view of downtown Manhattan.

BAM Dance Africa

BAM, May 28-30

Each year, BAM hosts the country’s largest festival dedicated to African dance and art. This year, the program focuses on Senegalese culture. Highlights include music from world renown percussionists and performances from Compagnie Tenane, who combine modern and traditional movement. Plus, don’t miss the outdoor street bazaar featuring over 150 African food, fashion and craft vendors.
